Yeah, so to those here who are members of the Saiyuki fandom I present this pet peeve of mine. The mischaracterization of Goku and Sanzo.
Alright, I'll start with Goku. I admit, I'm a fangirl. I love my slash. I'm an avid fan of Goku and generally read about any pairing he's featured in. (SanzoxGoku, HomuraxGoku, HakkaixGoku... you name it, I've probably read it.) However, I've found most writers can't characterize him well, at all.
Goku is a whiny, happy-go-lucky, bratty teenager. He wears his heart on his sleeve and generally says whatever is on his mind. Goku doesn't angst like the others in Saiyuki do. Sure, he gets his moments of angst after he goes seiten taisei or something like that, but usually a quick pep talk from one of his friends and he's back to normal. Goku is essentially still a little kid in how he deals with his emotions.
The best example is of this episode 19.. where the party met the four sisters and each had their own counterpart. In this episode Goku was interested in that one girl with the buns one her head. He had a crush and how did he react? He flirted... badly. Like any other hormonally challenged teenage boy would do. And how did he react when they were forced to kill them? He fell down and cried for them, roll credits. By the next episode everything was back to normal; Goku was his usual happy self.
My point is, yes, Saiyuki can be an angsty angsty show, but the angsting is usually left to the other three members. Goku is allowed his moments of wangst, but I wish they'd be kept brief.
And now I rant about Sanzo. In the show, I generally hate him. But every now and then he gets a moment to show he cares, in some odd offhanded way, and I like him. However in fanfiction, writers seem to just write him however they want. Sanzo will either come off the 'cold, evil, bastard who would sooner kill his comrades than bat an eyelash', or the 'waffy, sensitive, lover who really was a kind soul once random charater A could melt the walls of ice surrounding his heart'. And both cliches are always saturated in far too much angst, of course.
I'm sick and tired of these fanfictions in which Sanzo either shoots at his would be lover, or professes him poetry regarding his undying love. Sanzo's character shouldn't be too hard to figure out, but the amount of completely inane fics out there leads me to believe otherwise. Many writers seem completely incapable of even realizing Sanzo has a balance too him and isn't just some extreme.
I must say however, before I go, that this does not mean there are no well characterized Gokus or Sanzos out there. In fact I've seen them well written quite often. (Not nearly as much as I've seen them badly written, but that's not the point I'm trying to make now! XD;) It just goes to show that they can be written correctly if people would just think about what they've written before they post it for the vicious internet fangirls to find. >__>
